The world has gone to the dogs [Wednesday
July 15th, 2009 at 6:25pm]

Okay, there are clearly a lot of problems with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB2MDYzx5OY.  Clearly.  How many of them did you spot on the first try?  Bikini girl gives up everything to stay skinny, the whole more than a piece of meat bit, yeah.  All of those are bad things, but they are not overly surprising.  Watch again, and this time, listen to the background song rather than sexy meat eating bikini lady.  Then watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSJytITxazU.  Holy ef.  Does everyone else see what just happened there??

This post is about women and sex. [Wednesday
June 17th, 2009 at 12:46pm]
Because today there have been a ton of links related to women, sex, and sex work on the various blogs that I read.

http://www.salon.com/books/review/2009/06/16/east_west_sex/index.html  (holy ef, seriously?  This still happens?  wtf?  I mean, I'm not stupid, I knew it still happened, but some guy got a book published about it, really.  I hate the world some days)

http://www.chezstella.org/stella/?q=en/14answers (informative, liberal.  I hated the world slightly less after reading this one.)

http://www.wakingvixen.com/  (waking Vixen- a blog by the only female porn director who won an award at the feminist porn awards this year for "The Bi Apple", and author of "Naked on the Internet"  She's pretty swell. :) )

http://www.feministing.com/archives/016164.html#more (not exactly woman-specific, but covers the way that the straight porn industry, which includes both hetero and girl on girl sexy times puts sex workers at risk with "condom optional" policies.  Apparently "gay porn" generally refers specifically to guy on guy type sexy times.  Clearly I need more sex-ed.)

This is how bored I am: [Wednesday
June 17th, 2009 at 12:29pm]
1. Your Middle Name: Claire (according to my mom the "e" on the end is what makes me a girl!)
2. Age: 21
3. Single or Taken: single.
4. Favorite Movie: Depends on my mood, there are a few movies that I LOVE... but, um, right now?  Breakfast on Pluto.  Such a good film.
5. Favorite Song or Album: Um... hmm.  This is kind of cliched, but anytime that I am sad/lonely/don't feel nice generally I put on Leonard Cohen's "Hellelujah" and then I feel better a little and sometimes cry.  So I guess that's it.
6. Favorite Band/Artist: I am very much loving Neko Case.
7. Dirty or Clean: wait, dirty or clean what?
8. Tattoos and/or Piercings: piercings!  um... 3 lobe piercings, one upper ear, belly button, and nose.
9. Do we know each other outside of LJ? no.
10. What's your philosophy on life? On a meme?  I don't think so...
11. Is the bottle half-full or half-empty? It depends on what is in the bottle.
12. Would you keep a secret from me if you thought it was in my best interest? Probably not.
13. What is your favorite memory of us? The internet. :)
14. What is your favorite guilty pleasure? masturbation??
15. Tell me one odd/interesting fact about you: I ukrainian dance,. :)
16. You can have three wishes (for yourself, so forget all the 'world peace etc' malarky) - what are they? Grad school funding, increased sex life, and um, eternal happiness.
17. Can we get together and make a cake? I am terrible at cake making, really.
18. Which country is your spiritual home? I am not sure what this means, but since Canada is my physical home we shall go with that.  So Canada.
19. What is your big weakness?  I am very not tactful
20. Do you think I'm a good person? Sure. :)
21. What was your best/favorite subject at school? English.
22. Describe your accent: I say "toast" like the mom on "Fargo" does, even though I have been trying to correct this since I realized it sounds stupid.  I work at an all day breakfast place, so sometimes this is very frustrating.
23. If you could change anything about me, would you? No, because I wouldn't have any idea what I could change to increase your quality of living (if anything) and would fear screwing things up for you.
24. What do you wear to sleep? a t-shirt and undies.
25. Trousers or skirts? Both, but not at the same time.
26. Cigarettes or alcohol? alcohol.
27. If I only had one day to live, what would we do together? (If you have no idea, just say something crazy, it'll entertain me!) take a pole dancing class and then go to confession.
28. Will you repost this so I can fill it out for you?Yes.

Illness [Saturday
June 6th, 2009 at 11:13pm]
[ mood | sick ]

I am quite sick.  According to the woman that I caught this sickness from, whose parents and grandparents all ended up in emergency because of it, I should stay far away from very old and very young people.  This does not change the fact that I have to work tomorrow.  Hopefully I will get sent home for being too sick.  I had absolutely no voice today (if you called me and I didn`t answer my phone this is why- I could not make noise at all, save for a very scary scratching sound that would likely have terrified you)... if this continues tomorrow they will probably have to send me home anyways, as I won`t be able to yell over the all of the noise of a busy Sunday at the nook.

first update in for...ev...er... [Thursday
June 4th, 2009 at 11:08am]
Tansi regular blog readers!

Xcompany has just returned to Winnipeg from our 5th (??  I think 5 is correct, but there have been several events organized by related groups/companies, such as Don Amero  and band, that I may be missing    check out pics here) trip to beautiful Pukatawagan.  I can't speak for the others, but I know that I am refreshed and excited by art (generally, but also in my case dance) and all of the crazy ways that various art forms can speak across language and cultural barriers. Stay tuned for summer Ph.A.T (Physical Arts Training) camp updates &etc. :)

And now for something hilarious:

Mom: I'm coming to the city this Sunday for another Dr's appointment.  I'm going to take you shopping.
Me: Um, thanks.  I totally need some new pants.
Mom: And some new shirts.
Me:  I think... I think I have a lot of shirts.  Tons, really.
Mom: Jocey, you know those shirts that you have with writing on them?
Me: ....yes...
Mom: I watch "What not to Wear" all the time you know...

Me: ...okay...

Mom: You're too old for those shirts.
Me: ... You know me, mom... I'm not going to let some TV show tell me what to wear...
Mom: Yes, but I think so too.  Realy Jocelyn, new shirts.

Free Stuff [Saturday
March 7th, 2009 at 7:17pm]
Okay, so some people might find this gross, or at least I am paranoid that they will.  So if you find this gross, please ignore it.

In cleaning out my bathroom I realized that I have a ton of products/stuff that I don't use.  Some of it has never been used, or some of it has become obsolete (like tampons, since I switched to the Diva cup).  So, here's an inventory of stuff that I have that I am willing to give away, because giving stuff away is better than throwing it out.

*Irish Springs Shower Gel (unopened)
*Avon Lotion X2 (unopened)
*Mary Kat Satin Hands Kit- 3/4 full. Expensive stuff that I just don't use.
*OB Tampons multi-pack.  There are 16 of 20 left.
*Tampax tampons.  4 of 10 left.
*Always Ultra Thin w/Wings.  11 of 18 left.

I may post more stuff as I come across it.

Also: I am cleaning out my old clothes and stuff... does anyone want to do a clothes swap with me??  If we could get like 5 people it would probably be pretty awesome, I would even volunteer my apartment.  There could be gin... :p

Wow. [Tuesday

Most of the answers on today's "Writers Block" (which I don't normally read, but today I wanted to see what other LJers are reading :P) fell into one of the following four categories:

1.) part of the Twilight series
2.) part of the Harry Potter series
3.) part of the Chronicles of Narnia
4.) James Frey's "Million Little Pieces".

I am sad at the world right now.

Two Things [Wednesday
February 25th, 2009 at 6:05pm]
One is pretty okay, the other is fairly annoying.
1.) My PoCo paper is coming along nicely.  I feel like I've been able to make some pretty cool connections, and am pretty happy with my 3/4 finished paper.  This is only partially related to how cool I think the term "power strucutre" is.

2.) I am fucking sick of hearing "there are totally vegetarian options available at restaurant X" in reference to salad.  Salad is not a meal.  Not only is salad considered either a starter or a side (think about it.  would you suggest that someone eat only mashed potatoes or soup for lunch?), but it is mostly water.  I think the punishment for this particular behavior should be to eat only salad (and as much water as you would like,of course) for lunch for every time that you have ever reassured a vegetarian in this way.  Also, I really resent hearing "come on, let's just go to McDonald's, everyone can eat something there!" right after I have just explained this exact thing.

On another note, I'm not as mad as that last pargraph probably makes me sound.

Deserving of it's own post [Wednesday
January 14th, 2009 at 11:55am]
I am currently reading Elizabeth Smart's "By Gran Central Station I Sat Down and Wept", and it is simultaneously the most beautiful and the most agonizing piece I have ever read.  I am only thirty odd pages in, and have cried, squirmed, and felt utterly destroyed by this single short novel.  An exerpt:

"And then I force my vanity to stand on the cliff and let self contemplate self which only suicide can join.
Standing a thousand feet above the sea, how does my adoring reflection look now with the fishes of death swimming through its hair?  Pearls and bubbles float up from the ocean bed, makin a prettier noose for death, the last decoration of self-love, ring-a-rosing the gruesome vision.  When we meet, and i clasp that deceiver in my arms, our almalgamation will poison the sea.  But not tonight.  There is no moon." (32).

Not the most moving passage, but one of my favourites thus far.  :D

Disclaimer: The following post contains complaining [Tuesday
January 13th, 2009 at 11:53pm]
[ mood | annoyed ]

I like our current apartment, I really do.  It's in a nice, quiet(ish) area that is safer than most places we've lived without costing much more.  It has high ceilings, hardwood floors, and a cheerful paint job.  There are many good things about this place.  It also has two leaky radiators, a leaky toilet, and a black thing that's been in the bathroom not attached to anything since we moved in (according to the landlord that was here when we moved in, it's supposed to attach to the wall around the bottom of the bathroom...??).  We are never able to get ahold of our caretaker (she sends her child to answer the door or doesn't answer the door at all and has no posted phone number), and have talked to the realty company several times about these things.  Minor as they are, it's getting to be a pain in the butt to use our bathroom (no pun intended).  However, all of these things are somewhat manageable.  It's the fact that the fire alarm doesn't seem to be properly wired (the building has regular smoke detectors and pull stations- maybe this has something to do with it?) - thus the fire alarm seems to go off at its own will every-so-often.  Tonight was the second time this has happened since we moved in.  While outside, waiting for the fire trucks to show up so the fire fighters could inspect our building and let us back in, we met a nice older gentlemen from the building who informed us that this very thing (fire alarm without a fire or anyone having pulled it) occured three times last year and four times the year before.  Wooo.  Yay.  Not.  And, to make things worse, after having gone through all of the hassle and stress of a false alarm, and wanting nothing more than to curl up in the tub with a good (necessary) book, the water is coming out the taps rusty coloured.  Joy.  Joy joy joy joy joy.  I sincerely hope that 1.) this isn't related to the fire alarm scenario earlier (someone mentioned something about the steam heating having set off the alarm before) and 2.) that this gets fixed or fixes itself quickly- because the way things are going it looks like unless it is a building wide phenomenom it isn't going to be on anyone's priority list.

Life is really strange sometimes [Friday
January 9th, 2009 at 9:29am]

Coffee/beer and hummus with Marika last night was super great (thanks, Marika!).  Coffee and hummus are also two things that appear on the stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/ blog, which I've been reading and thinking about lately.  I'm very white (right down to the sea salt- hell, I bought that sea salt when I had an infected piercing and it was suggested to me by like 8biliion people.  for the record, it worked.  Also, it was $7!), and I've begun to feel guilty about this.  More on that later.  Last night I had a dream situated in the future- after this term is over and I've completed my "Intro to Forensic Antrhopology" course.  In this dream, it was my ethical duty, as a new expert of forensic anthropology, to try and positive ID any corpses that I happened to come across (and I came across a lot of corpses!).  It was kind of gross- I'd stumble across a freshly dead body (I only know that it was freshly dead or close to it because it still looked like a normal person, except maybe sleeping, and was also wearing clothes), and would immediatly start taking off all the "soft tissue" so I could get to the bones and start my crazy little process.  Yeah.  Screw looking for ID or anything- straight to the bones!  I really hope I don't have to sign any oaths after this course is finished...

Too cute not to share [Wednesday
January 7th, 2009 at 8:28pm]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A2Ap3DyvLg&eurl=http://appetiteforequalrights.blogspot.com/search/label/advertising&feature=player_embedded

You know, because real men care about their kids, and spending time with your kids is super cool.  Or something.  Anyways, I found it really awesome.

I had my first "Introduction to Forensic Anthropology" class today.  It was the most alientating, strange experience in recent memory.  I found myself in a huge theatre, surrounded by 109 other students, listening to a lecture mainly having to do with bones and dead stuff that had no interest to me except for the excitng new language.  Yeah.  We'll see how it goes... it seems like it will be more interesting than Astronomy (and also: I do not want to take 3 extra credit hours of science if I can help it), but harder to do well in.  Such is the nature of life.

I've also begun the drafting/rewriting of the paper that I will (hopefully) be reading in Canterbury (eee!) in late June.  It's an intense mixture of exciting and anxiety-inducing.  I didn't get much further than a re-wrtitten introduction and careful consideration of my professor's feedback today, which sort of made me nervous.  However, I do have plenty of time, and have also devoted myself to working on it for at least one hour every day.  I've done something similar with my research position stuff, and so far it's working out really well.  I do skip the odd day here and there, but generally work five days out of seven.

Anyways, I am seriously looking forward to Topic in Post Colonial Studies tomorrow.  It should be like Stein all over again, but not about Gertrude Stein and with a different professor, and probably with less wine and chocolate cake. Speaking of chocolate, Ophelia licked clean/ ate a part of one of the little brown cups that Reese Peanut Butter Cups come in.  She didn't ingest a ton of chocolate and peanuts, just trace amounts... but further updates on bunnies and chocolate as needed anyways.

Right then.  I shall see most of the people who read my blog in PoCo tomorrow.

It's New Years, all over again: [Sunday
January 4th, 2009 at 10:00pm]
What are you doing next Saturday?  If you answered "Nothing", chances are you would probably love to come celebrate Ukrainian New Years.  Yay!  Okay, so here's the scoop: I'm dancing with the Ukrainian dance group that performs at Folklorama.  Because we're a performance group, we don't pay fees of any sort.  However, we do have to help with fundraising, hence the selling of Malanka (Ukrainian New Years) tickets.  Tickets are 10$ each, and include a night of dancing (live band), drinkng (erm, pay bar, but still), and eating (meal=free) delicious Ukrainian food (think butter and carbs.  yum!).  Plus, you get the honour of supporting culture and the arts in the fine city of Winnipeg.  Anyways, if you're interested, let me know.  :D

New years, etc. [Saturday
January 3rd, 2009 at 8:24pm]
Usually my New Years resolutions fail miserably.  They're also usually terrible, unreachable goals.  This year, I've decided to set purposeful goals that will hopefully be more easily acheived.

1.) Be concious about making healthy (and healthier) choices.  I normally try to lead a fairly healthy lifestyle, but have noticed that in the winter I have trouble incorporating excersize into my daily routine (except dance rehearsals and training, which don't really feel like exercise, oddly enough.)
2.) work on my Hebrew.  I don't want to lose it, but am having trouble finding time to read and translate (I also seriously need to review some of the verb conjugations).
3.) (continue) get(ting) serious for grad school- this year has been great in terms of opportunities, such as my research assistant position and the upcoming conference.  I would like very much for this trend to continue. :D
4.) Try something new.  I'm thinking about giving lap swimming a go.  Maybe.  If I can find time.
5.) Blog more.  Not blog like.... "this is what I did today... blah blah blah", but either start a themed blog (something like feministing, but less big and good, you know, because I'm not a published feminist lawyer... though that would be super awesome), or find one to contribute to.  Anyone else interested??

Also: Marika!  Thanks for coming over for games and khalua/whiskey sours/iced cider.  :D  Do you want to go for coffee after PoCo on Thursday??  Or something similar?

And: Michelle!  Also thanks (heck, there could not have been scattegories without you!) .  What time on Wednesday works best for you?  (I have class at 2:30, so either before then or after 4.  I think my class ends at 4.  Something like that. )
